Festival in New Caledonia

• April
15-18 April Holiday of the ‘Sarexwada Yam ‘, Noumea, Culturel Tjibaou. A confirmation of the new crop of the name’ or yam, with tastings, exhibitions and a caf-concert. Entry 5 hundred F. Seventeen April Carnival of Noumea. Join the fun as many themed floats parade Noumea’s streets, then bop the night away at the carnival dance hall in Place des Cocotiers. This year’s theme is ‘Our Green Planet’. Seventeen April Green Carnival, Koumac.

The northernmost city of Koumac celebrates with a carnival. This year’s theme is ‘All in Green’. Thirty April-2 May Avocado Holiday , Mar, Nc, A confirmation of the avocado and other delicacies. Local clans will organize visits, hiking and pirogue (outrigger canoe) trips.

8-9 May Venison and Prawn Holiday, Boulouparis. Watch the carving of the venison, take a role in the prawn-shelling competition, or give it your best shot in the stags’s Roar ‘ contest. Fourteen May Street Carnival and Pastry Contest, Koumac. The city of Koumac becomes pedestrian-only for this carnival, and local pastry shops square off in a competition to see who makes the best patisserie. 23-29 May Va’a / Waka Ama (Outrigger Paddling) World Champions, Noumea. The 14th International Championships happen on the wonderful waterfront of Noumea’s famous Anse Vata Bay. More than 2,500 world sportsmen and officers from more than twenty different nations will attend.

June-July, DTBA Holiday of Music, Koumac. Countrywide party of music which changes location each year. In 2010, the primary events happen in Koumac city centre and close by areas.

• July

3-4 July The Transcaledonian Southern Province Mountain journey Race. Arranged by the Dfi Sant organisation, this yearly event in the 1st weekend of July crosses New Caledonia’s central mountain range. Fourteen July Bastille Day, Noumea. Parties including a morning army parade thru Noumea, people dancing displays and evening fireworks.

• Aug

5-8 Aug 16th ‘Gastronomy and the Art of Table-Making ‘ Expo, Noumea. A particular expo designed for the accomplished and ambitious connoisseur.

• Sep

10-12 Sept Faithfulness Islands Fair, Lifou. This year’s holiday happens on the biggest of the Commitment Islands, Lifou, which is known for its long bays, white-sand beaches, reef cliffs and magically-coloured coral banks. Twelve Sep Candlenut Worm Fair and Market Day, Farino. Fans of this weird local specialism indulge their taste for these plump white worms. Enter the challenge for the champ worm eater! Farino holds an energetic market the same day. Twenty-four September New Caledonia Day, countrywide. A party venerating the day in 1853 when New Caledonia was officially made a French overseas territory.

• October

29-31 October Seafood Market, Menaku, Mar. A three-day seafood holiday and market at Menaku in the Commitment Islands.

• Nov

5-7 Nov Red Snapper Holiday, Mar, Roh. A festive weekend on the island with red snapper tasting, fishing demonstrations, journeys and ship journeys to Rekabeco. 27-28 November Taro Holiday, Mar. Rural and cultural holiday with a spotlight on taro. Held in Rawa tribal hamlet, La Roche District.

• December

15-17 Dec Holiday of Nengone, Mar. An Xmas holiday at Nengone with busy markets, refreshment, crafts and attractions. 19-Dec Yuletide Market, Farino. A Christmas-themed market in the center of Farino town with crafts, fresh regional produce and local performers playing standard and latest Yuletide music.

All December Xmas Lights of Noumea. Noumea’s Place des Cocotiers lights up through December with entertainment for the kids and a giant letterbox for their letters to Santa.
